About The Grand Companion

I'm Carmen Shaw, and I started The Grand Companion because of two remarkable women: my mother and my grandmother.

In 2012 my mother, who was also my mentor and my best friend, became very ill, and I looked after her at home through her last months. At the same time my grandmother, 85, sharp and always beautifully put together, was living with me too. I lost them both within a few months of each other.

Those months taught me that growing older doesn't have to mean losing yourself. My grandmother stayed elegant to her last days. My mother just wanted her next plan, her next outing, her next reason to look forward. What they both needed was someone in their corner who treated their time as worth dressing up for.

Before moving from South Africa to Tennessee, I spent fifteen years running my own business, where looking after people with patience and discretion was the job every day. The Grand Companion brings all of that together: a private, personal companion for the errands, the home, the outings and the company, so you can keep living the way you like.
